FRONT COVER RESEARCH FOR MY MUSIC MAGAZINE

This music magazine front cover looks really professional and eye catching, and is clearly obeying the rule of thirds through where BeyoncĂ© is sitting. There is a running colour theme of orange, yellow and black which makes the front cover more dramatic, and look more thought out and therefore professional. There are short snippets of writing, which gives the reader an idea of what the magazine is about but does not put them off reading it. I also like the look that the names of famous people have been highlighted, to draw attention to them an persuade people to read it. From the front of this magazine I will use the idea of picking about 3 or 4 colours and have them as a running theme throughout my front page, although i will not just be using these colours in the magazine. I will try harder to obey the rules of thirds, and I like the idea of highlighting the famous names as this will persuade people to read it.

I love the use of colour in this magazine front colour and how some colours are used more than other, for example the main colours that are used are black, white and brown, and only a bit of red is used on her nails, lips and the 'x' at the top of the page. I really like the design of the front page and the picture of 'Katy Perry' but I don't think there is enough writing on the page to let the potential buyer know what the magazine is about. Although the colours and use of light and dark make it very eye catching, I don't think people would be tempted to read it. From looking at the front page of this magazine I have learned to use more writing, to give people a taste of what the magazine is about. I like the idea of using light and dark more creatively, and because this may be due to Katy wearing black I will get my model to wear black clothes. Especially because black seems to be a running theme on magazine front covers because it is dramatic and eye catching.

Although this is not a music magazine and does not fit into my research, but I want to highlight it's good points and faults anyway. Like I previously said I will use 3 or 4 colours for the front page, but I don't think these colours work together so I probably won't use red, yellow and blue together. But we have to remember that this is a girls life magazine so it does not
necessarily have to be or look professional, as long as it appeals to this age group. There is enough writing on the front page to let the reader know what the magazine is about, but only the coloured words stand out.

Although I will not be getting Beth to wear something this revealing I love the layout of the front of this magazine, it is simple and sticks to red, brown, black and white colours. The page is not overcrowded, and the different font sizes draws our attention to certain words and especially the title. I also love the way famous singers names are written at the top of the page

Although in some ways this music magazine front cover is boring, I love the way it does not overcrowd the page with writing or different colours. It sticks to just grey, red, black, white and Kelly's skin and hair colour, and because the writing is on a white background it means that all of the writing is clearly visible. This is obviously really important so when designing my music magazine front cover I will ensure that all writing is visible and that they stand out from the background.

I love how this front cover is so dramatic, and sticks to it's main colours of red, black and white (but there are still elements of yellow and pink being picked up in some places). I think these colours are perfect for the front cover I will be making so I will mainly use black, red and white. I also really like the red rectangle at the corner of the page, because it breaks up the pictures that are on the page whilst adding colour. Also because of where the title is positioned and the colours of it, it stands out massively and to an extent is more eye catching that the photo itself. Although I like the positioning of the people on the front cover, for some reason I do not like the pose that they are assuming. But overall I think it is extremely dramatic and I intend to use some elements of this front cover in my own design.

When you first look at this magazine front cover it is not obvious whether its target audience is male, female or both because of the colours used which are mainly black, light grey and dirty blue. Although this is not my favourite music magazine front cover I love the positioning of all the writing and how they are of different sizes and colours (especially because Kelly Clarkson is on the front of this magazine her name at the bottom of the page is written in a bigger and bold font), and despite all of the different colour and sized writing around her photo she is still the focal point, which personally I think is extremely important as it should be the first thing the reader sees.

Although this 'top of the pops' magazine looks almost childish, and does not feature a female singer or group on the front cover. I have chosen it because of the use of colour, and how although there are lots of pictures and subtitles over the picture of the group 'The Wanted' it does not look overcrowded so I might use the same sort of layout when layering pictures and subtitles on top of my picture of Beth. The use of the pink, purple, black and white makes this front cover more dramatic, and the yellow box around the words 'The Wanted' makes the words stand out. Although I don't intend to use the same colours I still want to create this dramatic effect through the use of colour.

I have decided that this is the music magazine front cover that I will be basing my design on, because the design makes it obvious that it is trying to target a young girl audience due to the colour and context of the magazine. I also love the way some of the pictures are boxed so I might use this idea in my own design, and I definitely want my title to be bold and stand out like 'Top of the Pops' does, and my writing to be different colours and sizes. Also I love how Cheryl is wearing a leather jacket, so I may ask Beth to wear one of mine when we do the photo shoot.
