I used all of these pictures below in my music mood board, and now I will be evaluating them and deciding what I do and don't like about them. This will give me a clearer idea of what I want the photos I take to look like, and I think just by doing the music mood board I know what type of singers and musicians I will be looking at, and who I want my target audience to be.
I really love this picture of Beyoncé, and for nearly all the pictures on my mood board I searched for black or black and white ones as I feel that these are more dramatic and will stand out. I think the subtle difference in terms of light is really clever, as only certain elements of the picture are highlighted, which is mainly her face and hand. This photo is sexual and seductive and stereotypically this is normal for a singers photo shoot, but I haven't decided if I want to go down this road or not. So probably the best thing to do would be to experiment with different poses and see which ones work best with the model I will be using.
I love this picture of Kelly Clarkson, and how it is slightly controversial because whilst bringing in the sexual and seductive innuendo the way her collar and hair is arranged makes her look vulnerable. I also like the use of shadows in the background of the picture
I love the use of light and dark in this picture, but I don't think it was be as good without Katy's dark hair and eyes, because without this black the picture would just be grey and flat. Like most of the other pictures I have chosen she is staring into the camera, although it is more obvious in this particular picture because it is a close up of her face and therefore her eyes look bigger. Again this picture is mildly provocative because shes got her finger in her mouth, although this pose makes her look more thoughtful than sexual.
Again I have picked a black and white picture, and I love this pose from Beyoncé and the idea of taking a magazine picture for more than just the top half of the body. I also like how her shadow has not been edited out because it makes the picture look slightly more natural, and I think this is important when staging a photo. This pose can also be interpreted as sexual because of her posture, her mouth is slightly open and the way she is pushing her body forward is also suggestive.
Although I like this picture it looks too staged and unnatural, and I don't like the fact that we cannot see her face because their is no connection between us and the photo. I do however like the use of colour in this photo and how her white dress makes her stand out from the black background, the red strobe lights make her look more dramatic, but are too hard and harsh for the photo.
I like this picture because of the way she looks and her smile, however I think she should be looking at and making eye contact with the camera. The darker background makes her stand out from it, and because the spotlights may be the only source of light in the room again it highlights her features and beauty. Although I like the picture I don't think this pose would be right for the front of a music magazine because she is not looking into the camera, and we only see a small part of her body.
I love the use of light in this picture and how it highlights certain features, like Fergie's hair and eyes. Although she looks pretty in this picture I don't think it is suitable for the front of a music magazine, because she is not looking into the camera and it is too much of a close up of her face, because on the front of a magazine generally you see most of the top half of the body, or at least more than the face.
I like the idea of using a black background because if the picture I take is going on the front of a music magazine I think it should look as if it has been taken on stage, and the black background makes her stand out more and brings the picture alive. Although it seems appropriate that a singer should be on the front of a music magazine I don't think the picture I take should show someone singing.
I love the idea of getting my model to pose on a chair and look straight into the camera like Jennifer Hudson, but because I can't decide whether to do the picture in black and white or colour I will experiment with both after I have taken the pictures. With colour the picture would come alive better, but with black and white certain features of the person in the picture will be highlighted, and in this picture her silver jacket and the left side of her face.
I'm not sure if this picture is in black and white or greyscale, but it is still a detailed picture without the colour. It is obeying the rules of thirds because Jojo is standing in the middle, and apart from the 2nd picture of Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson it is the only picture that shows enough of the top half of her body whilst looking straight into the camera. Again the light highlights certain features of the picture like her and eyes and hair and the objects in the background.
I like this picture of Katie and the use of light to make her face stand out, but this may also be due to her black hair and dress. The only thing I don't like about this picture is that because her hair and dress are the same colour we can't see where one ends and the other begins. Although I won't be able to copy the effect of this background when taking my photos I like the way it reflects the light and is almost like the inside of a lift. This picture is obeying the rule of thirds, and I like the pose she is doing when staring into the camera.
Although I like this pose that Jennifer is doing I still think that she should be looking into the camera, because we cannot connect with the picture and it makes her look more serious which is not necessarily a bad thing but it might not be suitable for a music magazine. The use of light in this picture is good as it emphasizes her face and profile, and the way it reflects off the wall brings it to life.
This picture of Avril has hardly any background and seems slightly boring, i'm not sure if this picture is taken in black and white or greyscale but it works. However, this picture would not be suitable for the front of a music magazine as it is only a close up of her face and we therefore don't see enough of her body. But this close up does show more clearly her intensely sad eyes which I think is important. There is a clear line separating the light and dark patches on her face which brings the picture to life whilst giving it a depressing and optimistic feel.
